Yuletide & You'll Not Tide Me Over!

Just to show that not everything concerning Eloise was madness, violence and death here's a nice reminder of the Christmas spirit via children and their gifts for the unfortunate at Eloise in 1962. Students from Maire School in Grosse Pointe, including Allan Pearsall, Steven Brown, Susan Brown and Gregory Woelfel, gathered toys and presents for patients at Eloise and other hospitals and nursing homes. As the article below states, other schools in the area also participated in various charity activities for the less fortunate.

Stuart Crane wasn't in such a giving mood however. It seems that in 1974 when Eloise was having severe trouble financing and housing the mentally ill they turned them over to the state who in turn put them on state assistance and housed some in hotels in the Detroit area.

Crane owned one of these hotels and after not being reimbursed for the lodging of former patients for the year he decided to unwisely withhold state sales tax to recover his losses! Needless to say that the gestapo busted down his doors (I might be embellishing a little!) and confiscated his valuables including precious metals, cash and Crane's 1979 Cadillac Eldorado. Topping off his losses, Crane was fingered as a tax protester. He denied the accusation and I'm sure he lost in court. I haven't gotten around to checking out what happened but I'm sure I will at some point this decade.
