Hospital Won't Treat Wayne County Inmates

Bankruptcy and financial woes aren't limited to modern day Detroit and Wayne County. The late 1970s and early 1980s brought about numerous financial difficulties, infighting between the city and county over whom owed what, a juggling of the books just to pay county workers their salaries and several work stoppages by striking workers.

In 1983, Detroit Receiving Hospital was caught in between one such battle between the county and city. With $2 million in bills accrued for prisoner treatment by the various detention facilities the hospital refused service and the inmates were taken to Wayne County General thereafter.
