The Death of a Former Belle

In the 1870s Mary Black was a Montreal belle but her fortune changed after moving to Detroit. When her husband, a wholesale liquor dealer in the city, died she turned to drinking and spent years in jail, lost her family, friends and earthly possessions and died in the poorhouse in September of 1906.
