Get Them Damn Hawks Away From Me!

Ann Arbor News, May 4, 1965
As this article by Hugh J. McDonald, staff writer for the Ann Arbor News, attests to, psychiatry at Eloise and other hospitals never really attained its goal of curing patients as much as it simply managed to pacify the mentally ill. Mainly with drugs though some forms of therapy were helpful to the marginally incapacitated.

The writer was trepidatious of the facility's reputation as a place where patients "scream and beat on the walls." But learned quickly during his several visits that the majority of outbursts were contained to episodic moments among the humdrum days inside the bleak facility.
