An Acidic Marriage Dissolves Into Madness For Two

Detroit Free Press, December 24, 1935
It's not often that a victim of a crime was the person sent to Eloise but in Sophia Michalewski's case a bottle of acid thrown at her did the trick. Neither articles states that she was hit or maimed but the fact that physicians didn't think that she'd fully recover suggests as much.

Samuel Michalewski, for his part, didn't try to assuage his guilt in the matter stating in court that he wasn't demented enough to be locked up in the loony bin. Which was sufficient to Recorder's Court Judge John P. Scallen who shipped him off to Jackson for 10 years.
