Shot Through the Heart and Eloise is to Blame

Detroit Free Press, April 28, 1910
May Alting was an expensive woman to care for at the old asylum. According to the Annual Report of the Attorney General of the State of Michigan her care amounted to $209.50. Which was the lower end of an average worker's yearly salary for the time. Which was bank vaults less than the cost on George Alting's soul. Unable to live without his wife he scribbled a suicide note and shot himself through the heart.
